Understanding the Four Types of Drivetrains

November 15th, 2020 by

There are many things you should consider if you are in the market to purchase a new vehicle. One thing you should consider is the type of drivetrain you want. There are four types of drivetrains, and each one has its benefits based on the kinds of roads you have in the Chino and Chino Hills areas. The four drivetrains are the:

Front-Wheel-Drive (FWD)
Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD)
All-Wheel-Drive (AWD)
4-Wheel-Drive (4WD)

FWD

The FWD system is the most common type of drivetrain for passenger cars. The engine delivers power to the front wheels, which pulls the car. The rear wheels do not receive any power from the engine. FWD cars typically have a good fuel economy, emit less carbon dioxide, and have better traction in snowy conditions in Diamond Bar.

RWD

The RWD system is common in sports cars. The engine delivers power to the rear wheels, which pushes a car. The front wheels do not receive any power from the engine. The weight of an RWD car is evenly distributed. This makes the car’s weight more balanced and easier to maneuver, yet the car can lose traction in poor weather conditions.

AWD

Many trucks and SUVs have an AWD system, yet an increasing number of passenger cars and sports cars are equipped with this system. The engine in an AWD system provides power to all four wheels. There are two types of AWD systems:

Full-time AWD – This provides continuous power to all four wheels.
Automatic AWD – The drivetrain primarily operates as a two-wheel-drive, then it switches to an AWD when more traction is needed.

4WD

The 4WD system is used on heavy-duty and off-road trucks and SUVs. A 4WD vehicle can handle any road or weather conditions, but it provides less traction than an AWD system.
