What is an Emissions Test?

2020 Kia Stinger GT2

A common question we hear from drivers around Chino or Covina is, “Do I need an emissions test?” California does require an emissions test, so you may now be wondering what it involves. Your vehicle features an onboard computer that oversees engine performance concerning fuel, spark, and air. Emissions tests check the operation of this computer in addition to making sure that your vehicle is not emitting higher levels of pollutants like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, oxygen, and oxides of nitrogen than what is allowed by law. Our service department has created a guide that will answer the following questions:

  • Do I need an emissions test?
  • How long does an emissions test take?
  • How much is an emissions test?

Do I Need an Emissions Test?

Because a majority of U.S. states require some form of emissions testing, there is a good chance that you do, in fact, need to have an emissions test. States that currently require emissions testing include:

  • Alaska

  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • District of Columbia
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana

  • Missouri
  • Nevada

  • New Mexico
  • New York

  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Washington

How Long Does an Emissions Test Take?

So, how long does an emissions test take? Fortunately, it is a fairly quick process. Generally, the test will take 15 to 30 minutes. Keep in mind that there are no federal requirements for emissions tests. Because each state has the ability to set its own standards, the length of these tests will vary. For states with more requirements, the test will be longer.

How Much is an Emissions Test?

Once again, this factor will vary by state. Pricing is generally in the ballpark of $15 to $30. If testing is required on a yearly basis, the cost is usually on the lower end of the scale.
