Electric Car Charging Time

2022 Kia EV6 Powering Electronics

Have the latest Kia electric cars caught your attention? If you have been thinking about making the switch to a Kia EV for sale, whether that’s a PHEV like the Kia Niro or a brand new Kia EV6, you may be concerned about how your current driving habits will need to change. Electric car charging time is often a top concern. How long does it take to charge Kia electric cars?

The answer to this question varies based on a few factors. Different EVs have different battery packs, and there are several charging options available as well. This is why it is difficult to come up with a one-size-fits-all answer. Still, we can help you learn more about the three main types of EV charging — domestic charging, rapid domestic charging, and public charging.

Options for Charging Kia Electric Cars

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): You can charge a Kia EV with just a normal grounded (three-prong) 110V/120V charging outlet (Level 1 charging). This is certainly not the quickest method, but it is the most convenient. How long does Level 1 charging take? Reaching a full charge could take as long as 24 hours. However, if you primarily use your vehicle locally, this method is great for topping off the charge overnight.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Level 2 charging takes significantly less time, but you will need to have a charging station professionally installed. Level 2 charging uses rapid (usually 240V+) chargers and charging generally takes just a few hours. DC fast chargers (as opposed to AC ones) are also common, and in some cases, your vehicle could receive an 80% charge in half an hour or forty minutes.
  3. Public Charging: When you are on the go in Covina or Ontario, there are public charging stations at many parking garages, malls, hotels, and even apartment buildings. You will see more and more of them popping up as more and more drivers are making the switch to an EV like the Kia EV6. These charging stations vary in type and speed.

What if you drive a plug-in hybrid like the Kia Niro PHEV? It will take significantly less time to charge your vehicle (Generally 1-4 hours for a full charge). The electric car charging time is much more rapid because PHEVs do not rely solely on electricity.

Home Chargers vs. Public Chargers

Most home chargers offer 3.7 kW or 7 kW charging. Public stations typically offer 22 kW charging, 43-50 kW rapid charging, and 150 kW rapid charging. This is why some EVs can fully charge at a public charging station in as little as an hour.
